It’s that wonderful time of year when the days start to get longer, and we notice a shift in the season. As the temperatures start to rise above zero degrees Celsius in the day and dip down below zero at night it’s the ideal weather for the sap to start flowing in the trees.
Over the years the ways to gather sap from Sugar Maple trees and cook it down to make maple sugar or maple syrup have varied over time. Cataraqui Conservation is grateful to the Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples of these lands who passed along the teachings of gathering sap (sweet water) from Sugar Maple Trees to make sugar and syrup.
For those in the community who can’t make it out to the Maple Sugar Bush at Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area, we are pleased to be offering online Maple Madness education programs to all ages including community seniors, day care, schools, community groups and more. Our online (virtual) program celebrates and shares about the stories and teaching of the sugar bush including how to make friends with and give thanks to a Sugar Maple Tree.
