Members of the community and economic sector in the Cataraqui Source Protection Area (Cataraqui Region and the Frontenac Islands) are invited to submit expressions of interest for the position of Economic (Agricultural) Representative and Community (Environmental Association) Representative on the Cataraqui Source Protection Committee (SPC). This is an opportunity to contribute to the quality of life in local communities.
The Cataraqui SPC was formed in 2007 to guide the protection of drinking water sources in the Cataraqui Source Protection Area. It is one of 19 committees established across Ontario under the Clean Water Act, 2006. The Committee oversees the preparation, implementation and amendment of technical reports and drinking water source protection policies, along with related public and stakeholder consultation processes.
For further information on the Source Protection Committee visit www.cleanwatercataraqui.ca
The Cataraqui Source Protection Area (CSPA) is located at the eastern end of Lake Ontario and the upper part of the St. Lawrence River. It includes a portion of the Bay of Quinte, Hay Bay, the southern portion of the Rideau Canal and the Thousand Islands. The CSPA includes portions of three counties and all or part of the 11 municipalities within the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority’s jurisdiction, as well the Township of Frontenac Islands (Howe and Wolfe Islands). About 80 per cent of residents in the CSPA (approximately 170,000 people) rely on municipal drinking water systems from surface or groundwater sources. The other approximately 40,000 residents in the CSPA obtain their drinking water from private intakes or wells.
